A wireless microphone system can provide content creators of all kinds, professors teaching in a lecture hall, and others with greater mobility and freedom in choosing locations to record and broadcast from. While setting up a wireless system might seem intimidating at first, learning about them and understanding how they work can make it easier. Once you get the hang of it, you open yourself to a new world of creative possibilities.

If this is your first time trying out wireless microphone systems, this article may be helpful for you. We will break down some of the fundamental parts of wireless microphone systems and what you need to do to set them up.

Components of a Wireless Microphone System

While wireless mic systems differ depending on the make and brand, most share some similar components. Every wireless mic system has a transmitter, a receiver, and a compartment for batteries. The transmitter is what converts audio from an input device to a radio frequency. This radio signal is then sent to the receiver, which is the box with antennas that is connected to a mixer. If you are new to wireless microphone systems, it’s best to start with something more basic, like the Movo WMIC 80 TR

Wireless Microphone System Setup Process

Start setting up by installing the receiver and antenna. Make sure to place the receiver where you or the subject can see it, while keeping it at least 10 feet away from wireless consumer devices to reduce dropouts and other audio issues. When installing the antenna, direct it upwards or angle it in a “V” shape if you’re working with more than one antenna. Connect the output of your receiver to the appropriate channel on your mixing board before turning it on.

Afterward, you need to begin the pairing process between the receiver and the transmitter. Before doing so, you need to make sure the frequency range of your wireless system is compatible with the area. You can do this by using a frequency finder to confirm the compatibility. Start pairing the receiver and transmitter by following the instructions on your wireless system’s manual. You can also use the auto-scan feature of your microphone system if it has one. The pairing will be done through a group and channel or through an exact frequency. An LED light or radio frequency meter should indicate the status of the pairing.

Complete the set-up process by setting the levels of your receiver, transmitter, and mixer. You should start with all the levels all the way down, then slowly turn up the transmitter and receiver levels while singing or playing into the input device like you would during a performance. Once the audio meter reaches maximum level, turn it down until it stops clipping. Lastly, turn up the channel’s gain knob until the indicator light turns on. Then turn the gain knob down again until the light turns off. Now, your levels are properly set and your wireless mic system is ready to use. Just make sure to adjust the fader as needed to maintain the levels.

How to Ensure the Performance of Your System

The operating range and signal strength of a cordless microphone system are largely affected by how much power the batteries still have. It’s essential to keep spares handy so you don’t experience too many performance issues, especially for longer audio recording sessions. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the kind of batteries that your wireless system uses so you have reliable extras. Many systems, such as the MovoWMX-20, opt for alkaline-based rechargeable batteries for added convenience.
