Wireless Microphone System Setup Process
Start setting up by installing the receiver and antenna. Make sure to place the receiver where you or the subject can see it, while keeping it at least 10 feet away from wireless consumer devices to reduce dropouts and other audio issues. When installing the antenna, direct it upwards or angle it in a “V” shape if you’re working with more than one antenna. Connect the output of your receiver to the appropriate channel on your mixing board before turning it on.
Afterward, you need to begin the pairing process between the receiver and the transmitter. Before doing so, you need to make sure the frequency range of your wireless system is compatible with the area. You can do this by using a frequency finder to confirm the compatibility. Start pairing the receiver and transmitter by following the instructions on your wireless system’s manual. You can also use the auto-scan feature of your microphone system if it has one. The pairing will be done through a group and channel or through an exact frequency. An LED light or radio frequency meter should indicate the status of the pairing.
Complete the set-up process by setting the levels of your receiver, transmitter, and mixer. You should start with all the levels all the way down, then slowly turn up the transmitter and receiver levels while singing or playing into the input device like you would during a performance. Once the audio meter reaches maximum level, turn it down until it stops clipping. Lastly, turn up the channel’s gain knob until the indicator light turns on. Then turn the gain knob down again until the light turns off. Now, your levels are properly set and your wireless mic system is ready to use.
