External microphones are an essential GoPro accessory if you’re noticing muffled audio quality, but, unfortunately, not all GoPros can be connected with an external mic. Before purchasing an external mic, be sure to check that your GoPro model is compatible and do your research to figure out whether or not it also needs an audio adapter to connect with a mic.
Recent generations of GoPros like HERO4, HERO3+ and HERO3 don’t have an audio input port, so you’ll have to connect a 3.5mm GoPro audio adapter to the device’s mini-USB port before you can insert a mic.
Newer models like the Black editions of HERO7, HERO6 and HERO5 have a USB-C port, which means you’ll need a USB-CGoPro mic adapter as well before you can connect any of our mics and audio accessories.
Right-Angle Mini Microphones
These types of directional GoPro mics are sometimes referred to as right-angle mini mics because they plug directly into your GoPro’s port at a right angle from the phone. Directional microphones are designed to pick up sound emanating from one specific direction and reducing any sounds being carried through the air from other directions.
Movo carries a number of directional GoPro mics like the Saramonic G-Mic Stereo Ball, which are great for recording speaking voices in front of the camera because they are angled in a way that faces your subject. What makes the G-Mic even better is that it’s battery-free and has a built-in USB connector. No need to get an adapter for this one. Just plug in straight to the action cam and shoot!
Lavalier Microphones for GoPro
Lavalier microphones are another great option for an external GoPro mic because they can be easily clipped onto you or your subject’s clothing. If you opt for a wireless lapel mic, you’ll give your speaker much more freedom as they can move around the scene without being tethered to a mic, perfect for shooting any type of action videos.
You’ll find a variety of lavalier GoPro microphones in our collection of equipment, but if you’re looking for one that can be used by plugging it directly into your GoPro’s mini-USB port, check out our Movo GM2. It’s a battery-powered clip-on lapel microphone that’s designed to produce accurate voice reproduction. A more economical choice is the Movo GM100, which can deliver accurate voice recordings as well. It comes with a 3.5mm mini-USB adapter and runs without a battery.
